Fostering PTW’s Safety Excellence: Grande Prairie

Safety is our top priority across all our branches, with each facing unique safety risks and challenges. Shawn Loiseau, the Area Manager at our Grande Prairie Branch, provided some insights into his team’s daily safety protocols that he utilizes to keep his team safe while on the job.

Our staff are dedicated to teamwork and take pride in their work. To improve safety in remote forest areas with limited cell coverage, the Grande Prairie team implemented the StaySafe Lone Worker app. This app allows for quick location tracking and immediate assistance for workers during emergencies. The team encourages their Journeypersons to involve apprentices in developing pre-job hazard assessments to help them learn hazard identification. Continuous communication and open dialogue among our workers are crucial for ensuring safety and reporting incidents. In the event of an incident, workers are moved to safe areas, and our safety representatives and management are notified so they can initiate an investigation. Grande Prairie promotes safety awareness through Behaviour Based Observations /Hazard ID submissions and safety meeting attendance. To encourage safety participation, Shawn holds monthly draws for team members who have met submission requirements and additional entries are given to those who have exceeded the minimum goal for submissions that month. These efforts are aimed at creating a stronger safety culture.

Last year, the Grande Prairie area was affected by wildfires, leading to the relocation of some workers and the closure of some work areas. In response, extra fire safety equipment was added to all fleet and contract trucks, including water containers, shovels, and axes. Safety meetings are held every third Wednesday of the month, and toolbox talks take place at every job site every morning. The entire team is committed to ensuring worker safety and fostering a robust safety culture.
