Fiber optics: From installation to termination
In an era where connectivity is paramount, fiber optic networks have provided the solution, connecting people and devices worldwide. The use of fiber optic cables is not as simple as previously powered technology, and requires specialized expertise and equipment. This is where PTW steps in, as our teams have comprehensive knowledge on fibre optics and are able to assist customers design a system that works for their needs.
The installation and maintenance of fiber optics involves two distinct processes: Fiber jetting and termination.
Fiber Jetting:
PTW utilizes cutting-edge technology in combination with compressed air to install fiber optic cables within HDPE ducts. This technology allows PTW to record vital information such as air pressure on the duct, cable installation speed, and the force applied to the cable. By leveraging Fiber Jetting, PTW ensures precise and efficient fiber optic cable installations.
Fiber Termination:
PTW has capabilities in executing two methods of fiber termination: fusion splicing and field-installed connectors. Fusion splicing involves using a fusion machine to melt the glass and fuse the fiber strands together, creating a seamless connection. Alternatively, field-installed connectors are employed using the Corning Unicam tool, enabling the installation of fiber connectors without the need for fusion splicers. This flexibility ensures that PTW can adapt to different project requirements.
To guarantee the performance and reliability of the installed fiber optic networks, PTW provides testing services. We employ the Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) and the Optical Line Termination System (OLTS), tailoring our approach to meet the unique needs of each customer. These testing methods ensure that the fiber optic infrastructure meets the highest industry standards.
Fiber optic termination and testing requires a clean and controlled environment and we invested in two state-of-the-art fiber splicing trailers. These trailers eliminate the need for setting up tents and heaters, enabling PTW to work efficiently in all weather conditions. This investment significantly reduces setup time, ensuring prompt service delivery.
Customer-Centric Approach:
As a Preferred Network Installer for Corning, PTW’s role extends beyond installation and termination. We work closely with customers to design tailored solutions that align with their specific needs. Moreover, in instances where existing fiber cables present issues, PTW possesses the necessary equipment and expertise to locate and repair damaged cables promptly. This comprehensive approach ensures a smooth and hassle-free experience for customers.
Thinking Creatively to Solve Challenges:
One of the significant challenges PTW encountered was during a project involving a sawmill. The mill had no documentation or drawings indicating their network connections, leading to complications during startup. However, we were able to resolve this issue by tracing and identifying the problematic connection. We then created a detailed drawing package that included all network connections. This creative solution not only resolved the immediate issue but also saved the client valuable time by providing a reliable reference for future troubleshooting.
As the demand for fiber optic installations and terminations continues to grow, PTW’s turn-key solution stands out as a game-changer in the industry. By providing end-to-end services, from network design and cable supply to installation and termination, PTW ensures a comprehensive and reliable fiber optic infrastructure for customers. Through our innovative approach, creative problem-solving, and commitment to exceeding expectations, PTW remains at the forefront of enabling seamless communication.
